Bethlehem, Pennsylvania 1930

A pair of men, the single jack,
descend into the earth to drill holes.
It isn’t warfare or a game. Beside
them, cold sticks of dynamite
stand upright, like horns.

Each blast shakes the ground afoot.
In shacks wives are unaware their
men have blown hell-coal
everywhere.
